Behind The Pages With Bob:

"The Donut Chef remains one of my most popular picture books with both kids and adults. While the story of the book is silly and chaotic, it actually contains a simple message -- that 'less is often more.' And while little Debbie Sue pines for the simplest donut possible (no spoiler alert here) I have always appreciated weirdly concocted gourmet donut flavors."

-- Bob Staake

Staake dedicated The Donut Chef to one of his longtime artistic heroes, the legendary poster designer A.M.Cassandre.

On a scene from the book there appears a billboard advertising "Personal Transformational Flying Saucers." Unfortunately, these are no long avaiable for purchase.

A little buy is shown wearing a shirt with the words "Rocket Playa" emblazoned on it. Staake's intent was to create a t-shirt slogan that made no sense whatsoever.

Summary:

In this tasty tale, a baker hangs out his sign on a small street, and soon the line for his donuts stretches down the block. But it's not long before the competition arrives and a delectable battle of the bakers ensues.

The Donut Chef was named one of The New York Times Ten Best Illustrated Books of the year in 2008.
