Behind The Pages With Bob:

"In 1989 I was approached by Writer's Digest Books to write and edit a new edition in their long running and wildly popular series of resource books for creatives. I had been a buyer of Writer's Market and Artist's Market for years, so when they told me they would be coming out with Humor and Cartoon Markets, I definitely wanted to be a part of it. I flew to Cincinatti to meet the team at Writer's Digest Books and to see if we clicked and an hour later I was iffocially offered the position to edit HACM. Most of the Markets books had been written, edited and researched by in-house personnel at WDB, but this title would be unique; it would be edited, written and illustrated remotely (in St. Louis) by a successful freelancer with years of professional experience. While Writer's Market and Artist's Market were good resources providing hands on information and tangible market contacts for freelancers, I always felt that they failed to take a 'deep dive' into the business of freelancing and how to build a successful career in a constantly changing and ever challenging profession. As a humorous illustrator I was a unique practiitioner in that I had always been 'venue diverse.' While they all require freelance illustrators and writers, the greeting card industry is different than magazine editorial, animation design and advertising are completely unique worlds, book publishing requires one thing while art/design studios need something else. To understand and negotiate all these separate (but similiar yet connected) worlds under the broad umbrella of 'freelancer,' cartoonists, illustrators and writers are best served when they're provided with unvarnished, honest and clear-eyed 'in-the-trenches' insights. But HACM wouldn't simply be a resouce in which I blathered about the do's and don'ts of freelancing, I would call on my connections in the industry and interview world class cartoonists, illustrators and writers (many beings friends who owed me favors) as well as top art directors, editors and buyers of freelance creative who would share their thoughts on how to succeed in the business. To this day I still encounter people who tell me that my three editions of Humor and Cartoon Markets changed their lives and set them on the path to personal success as a freelancer. Are there things I would do differently had I published these books in 2022? Hell yes, but for 1990, 1991 and 1993, there's nothing in these books that makes me cringe -- (except a few of my illustrations.)
