Behind The Pages With Bob:

"In 1988 I was approached by Warner Books to illustrate Jay Leno's first, Headlines. At the times I didn't realize I was one of two illustrators being considered for the job, the other being legendary MAD magazine cartoonist (and friend) Jack Davis. The news didn't sit well with me at all, especially given the fact that I was waiving both an advance and royaties and join Leno in donating the proceeds of the book to the Samuel Jared Kushnick Foundation to help fund Pediatric Aids Programs and Pediatric Immunology Research. The foundation was established by Leno's longtime manager Helen Kushnick to honor her son Samuel who had died of Aids at 3 after a blood transfusion.) I felt the book would certainly become a best-seller (it did) and my association with it would understandably help my budding carer as a illustrator of humor books. I told Warner Books that they simply had to decide on me or Jack, and soon, or I was walking. I wasn't necessarily surprised when they picked me over Jack, but I was thankful. When it came out the book sold like crazy and I comforted myself in knowing that at least I could sell the 14 original drawings to collectors for a good price. There was only one problem: When I asked for Warner Books to return the original drawings they said that somehow they had been lost. This forced me to seek a monetary settlement from Warner Books -- a most reasonable settlement that Warner Books agreed to pay. At the same time they informed me that they would be coming out with More Headlines, that they appreciated my waiving of an advance and royalties on the first book, but that they wanted me to illustrate the sequel as well -- this time with an advance and royalty agreement. Everything sounded fine to me -- and then Helen Kushnick herself stepped in..."

Summary:

Given the success of his popular and ongoing Tonight Show bit, Warner Books clearly felt it would be a slam dunk to publish Jay Leno's Headlines as a book. They were right -- it became a best-seller in 1989. Basically a collection of stupid newspaper wire source headlines (the funniest ones accompanied with Leno's trademark rimshot retorts,) it was no wonder that it took off the way it did.
