Behind The Pages With Bob:

"Ironically it was through the writing of this book that I decided to make the switch from working 'traditionally' to working digitally. While interviewing numerous colleagues for 'The Complete Book of Humorous Art' I was amazed at how many of them said they has starting creating their imagery on the Macintosh. Ultimately I learned that while many of these illustrators spoke of making the change, very few embraced the computer as their primary drawing tool. I, on the other hand, knew nothing about computers, but I was afraid if I too didn;t make the switch that I'd be viewed by art directors and editors as a dinosaur and my career would dry up. In the spring of 1995 after completeing the manuscript for the book I dove head first into the digital revolution. The learning curve was awful. My first assignment was a small color spot for the Chicago Tribune. With ink, gouache, watercolor and Prismacolor pencils that assignment would have taken me 25 minutes, but after drawing the line art, figuring out how to scan it, then coloring in Photoshop 3.0 (which I still use in 2022) the entire illustration took me more than 4 hours to complete. Happily, I learned to master Photoshop, got faster, and saw my already successful career as an illustrator shoot into the stratosphere. It was then that realized this 'computer thing' might catch on."

Summary:

In this witty and frank guide, 20 of today's top humorous illustrators talk about their work. They delve into such topics as: traditional and unconventional techniques, mediums and tools (from airbrush to toothbrush); the right way to get started in the business; where the money is; inspirations and influences; the ups and downs of illustrating for magazines, advertising, books, animation and other markets; and style... "slamitude" vs. subtlety.

Preliminary doodles, rough sketches and colorful final art illustrate the artists' graphic wits, which range from sophisticated to offbeat to downright bizarre. This is work that "takes no prisoners, straddles no fences, and makes no excuses." These illustrators thrive on distorting, exaggerating or totally recreating reality. "With that kind of freedom," notes author/artist Bob Staake, "anything can happen - and often does." If you need proof, just look inside.

Featuring exclusive interviews with the world's most renowned illustrators including Gary Baseman . Steve Bjorkman . Lou Brooks . Seymour Chwast . David Cowles . Jack Davis . Robert DeMicheill .
