Behind The Pages With Bob:

"'I'm A Truck' is the first Little Golden Book written by Dennis Shealy that I illustrated."

-- Bob Staake

It isn't always easy to hide little visual "easter eggs" in my Little Golden Books because the stories are relatively short and I don;t have as much real estate to work with as I do on a traditional picture book, so I really don't want to distract readers (yound or old) with hidden details.

I was raised on Little Golden Books as a kid, so I try to honor the tradition(s) of the imprint by making sure that my art is somehow reminiscent of that '1950s-1960's retro look' of the illustrations.

This is the first book in which I began giving each page of a 2-pag spread a different background color. I started doing this so when I created my illustration I would have a solid idea of where the center "gutter" would fall, but after finishing the pages I liked the effect so much that I would not give the background a unified color. (See example 1 and 3 to the right.)

My name's Big Blue Bill, and I'm a truck. I've got eighteen wheels turning, six hundred horses under the hood, and fifty-three feet o' trailer hanging on behind.
