Behind The Pages With Bob:

"'I created a series of concept board books for Simon & Schuster in late 90s. They were somewhat revolutionary in a couple of ways as they were both some of the first children's books published that were illustrated entirely by digital means, but they were also the first books I produced drawing with a h=mouse while using Adobe Photoshop 3.0 As of February 2021 I still use the (now) antiquated software to create my art, but back in 1998 working this way was considered cutting edge. I look at these books today and feel a sense of both pride and embarassment -- pride because I was trying things I never attemped before, embarrassment because in the illustrations I can see how I was exploring new creative territory -- and making countless aesthetic mistakes in the process. Of the four books -- My Little ABC, 123, Opposites and Color -- I consider My Little Color Book to be both the best illustrated and designed."

Summary:

In and out, day and night, up and down -- if they're opposites they can be found in My Litle Opposites Book.

Publishers Weekly

The theme continues with Bob Staake's My Little Opposites Book. With modern, crisp illustrations, children see a "big" dinosaur looking at a "little" bird flying over to say hello and a boy going "up" in a rocket ship and "down" in his parachute. In My Little Color Book, a "red fox" practically jumps off the page, as does a "green alligator," whose mouth is open wide.

Booklist:

The author of previous board books, My Little ABC Book (1998) and My Little 123 Book (1998), Staake offers two more concept books in the same format. Color begins, "Red Fox / White Mouse / Gray Elephant / Orange Tiger." Each double-page spread introduces two animals and two colors, moving from darker to lighter shades. Opposites features animal and human characters in illustrations that contrast ideas such as big and little or day and night. Although many board books introduce concepts, Staake's are notable for the sophistication of their graphic design. Simple enough to hold the attention of toddlers, these colorful, computer-enhanced images are also visually interesting enough to please preschoolers and parents as well.
