Behind The Pages With Bob:

"When I read Babs' manuscript, 'Sputter, Sputter, Sput!,' I was taken by the simplicity of her text -- and new I had to match her words with very simplied illustrations as well."

-- Bob Staake

A small illustration of Staake's Cape Cod home is shown in a town scene.

Staake his visual nods to the then two independent book stores in his hometown of Chatham, Massachusetts -- A yellow umbrella on top of a building for Yellow Umbrella Books and two cabbages and a crown next to a factory for Cabbages and Kings Bookstore.

At Mr. Big Gas' Filling Station there are two grades of fuel --Pricey and Extra-Pricey.

Summary:

Suddenly my car won't go!

Sputter, Sputter, Sput!

What's the matter? I don't know!

Sputter, Sputter, Sput!

Riding in the car can be lots of fun-going fast and far, uphill and downhill, zooming all over town. But suddenly-with a sputter! sputter! sput!-the car slows down and stops. What can be wrong?

Babs Bell's simple text, complete with all the sounds a car makes, combines with Bob Staake's bright, stylish illustrations to make an enjoyable ride.

From School Library Journal

PreS-"I put some gas in my car. Glug! Gurgle! Glug! It makes my car go very far. Zoom! Vroom! Zoom!" The little red car travels uphill, downhill, and through the town until "Sputter! Sputter! Sput!" its tank is empty. Apparently unfazed by the astronomical price of gas, the young driver fills up the tank and "Zoom! Vroom! Zoom!" heads right out of town. Staake's vibrant, computer-generated geometric art perfectly complements the playfulness of the simple, rhyming text. Certain to be a favorite among toddler vehicle enthusiasts, this book will be a wonderful addition to transportation-themed storytimes.

FIRR-Kids!

Bright colors, simple content, and fresh graphics make this a terrific book for the younger set. All too often books geared to this age range are full of syrup and fluff, both are which are decidedly absent here. Instead, a bright red car, complete with endearing wide-eyed driver, takes the readers on a twisting tour around town.

Bob Staake's unmistakable illustrations feature exaggerated shapes exploding with color. Circles, triangles, rectangles and squares are transformed into heads, bodies, buildings and cars. Half the pages are very simple, while the other half are brimming with tiny details waiting to be discovered.

Zoom! Vroom! Zoom! Readers can trace the little red car's path as the road meanders uphill, downhill, all about the city. Good clean car fun paired with a rhyming text makes for an enjoyable read! Let your child's imagination roar to life with this roadside adventure.

Amazon Customer Reviews:

Perfect Toddler Book

I love this book and my 2 1/2 year old grandson loves this book. He walks around quoting the catchy title - sputter sputter sput! The clean bright illustrations are a delight. The simple text is engaging, with just enough repetition, and still conveys a simple story. Perfect for all those little ones in love with vehicles.

Very Cool Book

The children in our classroom loved this book. They loved the illustrations of the little guy with the very large head driving around in his tiny car. Fun illustrations and simple story make this great for preschoolers.

Simple and Cute

My 3 yr old daughter loves this book. The illustrations are unique and while there are not a lot of words (she can sit for much longer books) but she likes the sound of the ones in the book "glug gurgle glug" "uphill downhill all around town" "uh oh my car won't go" and the title phrase "sputter sputter sput" when the car runs out of gas and she repeats them when she does pretend play with her own cars. It's funny b/c the pictures show the boy pulling up to a gas station and someone else pumping gas for him like here in NJ. We just moved here from CA so she is still fascinated that I don't get out of the car to pump my own gas and I tell them what kind of fuel to put in the car.
