Behind The Pages With Bob:

"I began playing around with a book titled 'The Path' in the Fall of 2014. As with many of my books, this one started with my idea for a cover. I created a valley shadowed by trees with a small boy looking down the hill at a path that snaked simply through the thin trunks. There was something mysterious and understated about the image and I wondered if I could write a story just as minimal. I wrote the story as a sparse, non-rhyming 'poem,' my goal being to express diversity from one spread to the next -- showing the path as easy, then becoming difficult, scary, surprising, etc. I felt it was also necessary to show the path along one specified route with no clear alternative options for the little boy. In the end, he discovers his own path -- and embarks on a solitary journey -- and only he knows where he is headed."

-- Bob Staake

The story of The Path is only 219 words long which makes it one the sparcist of my 75+ published books.

The solitary child's skin color intentionally changes from illustration to illustration. This may be the first children's book in which this has occurred.

In the illustrations, the path itself is not "drawn" traditionally. Instead it was cut out of paper each time with an x-acto knife, digitally scanned, and then incorporated into the various scenes. This insured that it looked both organic and consistent from spread to spread.

Award-winning author and New Yorker cover artist Bob Staake's lyrical words and stunning illustrations will lead children and adults alike to discover the encouraging truth that our path through life is not only challenging and beautiful-it is all our own to discover and invent. With a bonus The Path poster from Bob Staake inside the jacket

"You will walk. You will walk along a well-worn path that many people have taken-and long before you." So begins this inspirational journey over gentle, grassy hills, through fields of wildflowers, over raging rivers, up steep mountains, and even through a dark, chilly cave. When it splits in two, you will have to decide what to do next-and you'll create a path that's unique to you.

Starred Review:

An extremely inspiring story about life's twists and turns that will have universal appeal.

"Dramatic landscapes are employed to show a solitary figure-a small child-wandering through fields of flowers and over gentle hills, but also through dark forests, over raging rivers, and through mud and swamps. A dark cave seems like an unfortunate end point, but Staake is sure to show his character emerging into sunlight, facing a new set of divergent paths. "How will you know which way to go?" he asks, and then assures his readers that the answer lies within them, allowing them to confidently continue on a path that others may have traveled, but that will be uniquely their own. The use of distinct color schemes for each page amplifies the message of this philosophical concept book: Every life demands many different decisions, leading to circumstances that are at times pleasant and at times difficult. Younger children may view the journey in a concrete way, relating to the physical characteristics of the various natural settings. Older children will be able to interpret the figurative language and appreciate the greater wisdom of this gentle, seemingly simple tale.
VERDICT An extremely inspiring story about life's twists and turns that will have universal appeal."
