Summary:

I was a kid of 20 years old when I was asked by a small educational resources company in Southern California to illustrate this children's book.

Published in paperback in lavish light blue and deep purple (why?) the poem by Nikki Bryson Schreiner was accompanied by 49 pen and brush illustrations of intentionally neuter character who looked vaguely like a cross between a schmoo and a bartlett pear.

The drawings appear to have been dashed of at breakneck speed as if I couldn't wait to get paid for the "thing" (I believe I was paid for it,) each so bad that I'll safe myself from embarrassment and humiliation while refusing to display any sample imagery here.

In the 43 years since it was published, have only seen one copy of this attrocious book (the one signed to me by the author herself.) I googled the title and nada, zilch. I looked for it on ebay and heard crickets.

Alas, the Thing may have wanted to be something, but as for me, the illustrator wants nothing more than to grab a pillow and for once and for all put the thing to rest.
