The author and/or illustrator of over 40 books, Staake's Complete Book of Humorous Art and Complete Book of Caricature (North Light) are noted for their honest and enlightened look into the world of commercial illustration. Staake's children's books for Random House, Simon & Schuster and Viking, are often cited for their appeal to adults as well as kids. The American Library Association says "Staake's (children's books) are notable for the sophistication of their graphic design", while Publisher's Weekly notes that his "modern, crisp illustrations ... practically jump off the page."

He resides in Chatham, Massachusetts where he collects streamline moderne Heywood - Wakefield furnishings, vintage pottery, and original illustration art.
